As a hairstylist and salon owner I’m presented with this question of Image over and over.  I work with many different people in my business, but predominately I work closely with professional working women and a few men thrown in for good measure.  These professional types make up the majority of my personal clientele and the majority of the salon’s clientele as well.  I thought what I might do here in this little column is break it down, bit by bit.

While trying to find the formal meaning of image I came across this explanation – “Image is a picture expressing one’s self”-  This is by far my favourite formal explanation!  So, how are you expressing or representing yourself each time you leave your house? How is this “image” serving your business goals at presentations, luncheons or even in a lobby elevator? Giving time and thought to your overall image is just smart business, and begins at the tip of your head and goes to the bottom of your toes.  It certainly doesn’t need to be complicated or time intensive, but does require some thought and attention to the little things.

Let’s take a simple manicure for instance.  Your hands represent your business in so many different ways and people (whether you know it or not) are looking at your hands constantly! Are your nails bitten down and ragged, cuticles in need of a little TLC? Is your polish chipped and peeling? Are your hands chapped and rough from the ravages of old man winter?

Take a good look at your hands and really think about all that they do for you in your business.  They shake the hands of potential clients; they pass out your business cards (which I’m sure you’ve put a lot of thought and money behind); they sign important documents and contracts throughout the course of your business day. Sometimes they sit folded patiently on your lap, or in an instant become passionate extensions of a really good and juicy story!

Whatever they are doing, rest assured they are getting a great deal of attention whether you notice or not.  A simple manicure done in the salon or even at home can help bring your professional image together for you.  There is a reason why they call it being “Well Manicured”.

Networking Tip
Listen with Focus. When someone is speaking with you, give that person your entire focus. LISTEN. Really hear what the person is saying. Keep your eyes and ears focused and keep your self talk and thoughts focused too.
